Entering Abstraction with Oil Pastels

Welcome! In this 3-session online course we will reveal your unique voice as we break into the realm of abstraction through lecture, demonstration, and individual exploration. Discover the magic of oil pastels and open up a new world of artistic expression!

 

Session 1

Begin by pushing inhibition aside and investigating your individual mark-making sensibilities through 2 drawing exercises.

What you’ll need:

  • (2) #6B drawing pencils

  • Strathmore 400 series drawing pad, 8” x 10” or 9” x 12”

We invite you to dive right in!

  • Explore color! Try picking colors at random, with your eyes closed; try picking colors that speak to you.

  • Experiment with different kinds of marks; try out all of your tools!

  • Have fun! And remember, 0% expectations and 100% kindness for yourself.

 
 
 

Session 2

Let’s bring on the color! Learn about your tools and materials, and how to set yourself up for beautiful results. Explore how color relates to your authentic experience of the world around you. Create with reckless abandon, the first phase of creating compelling work, and let the colors run wild!

What you’ll need:

 

Session 3

Step back, and take a look. Learn the final three phases of creating compelling work and apply them to your new pieces. Discuss what makes a piece “work,” and examine pieces that do and don’t work.

What you’ll need:

  • the works you’ve created in this workshop

  • writing utensil and paper for taking notes

  • a curious and open mind
